The National Library of Spain (BNE) changes its library management system

A few days ago the Spanish National Library announced that its library management system, which is the tool that supports the online catalogue and most of the library processes, has been changed.

The new system offers, through the online catalogue, a series of new services for users. Among them, there stands out a personal area for managing consultation requests, saving records and searches, or exporting data in a wide range of citation models compatible with bibliographic citation management systems. The query interface also features useful tools such as faceted search and voice search. Moreover, the new system upgrades the graphic and functional design, adapting it to mobile devices, and allowing for better presentation and grouping of bibliographic information.

The change is due to a need for technological updating, which will now correspond to the cloud services model (Software as a Service). The BNE expects this model to be advantageous in terms of infrastructure management and maintenance. In the aspect of library management, it also presents other characteristics that will allow the BNE to incorporate new procedures in the automated management of its collections, such as Legal Deposit, the reuse of external bibliographic data, and greater integration in the processing of physical and on line publications.

Due to the importance of this change, which affects the way of consulting the catalogue and requesting documents both by direct and in advance request, a user guide for the new catalogue has been prepared, detailing the functioning of the new system.
