To celebrate, the National Library of Scotland launched a year-long programme of events and initiatives in January. Since its founding, the Library has amassed and cared for a collection of more than 50 million items spanning many centuries on behalf of the people of Scotland – all of whom are entitled to free access to the collections.
Reflecting on the life of the National Library, and on her own, National Librarian Amina Shah calls on us all to recognise the transformative power of libraries, these ‘lighthouses for the mind’.
