On October 10, 2024, the National Library of Moldova, represented by the General Director, Elena Pintilei, has signed the donation contract with the Department of Relations with the Republic of Moldova of the Government of Romania, represented by the State Secretary Adrian Dupu. The donation contract was signed in presence of the President of the Parliament of Moldova Igor Grosu, the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Moldova Sergiu Prodan, H.E. Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Moldova Cristian-Leon Turcanu, and State Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure of Romania Irinel Ionel Scriosteanu. Book lovers, writers, librarians and mayors representing the localities and library receivers of the donation came to the ceremony as well.
The ceremony of signing was organized on the Square of the Grand National Assembly in Chisinau. Around 100 000 new books and the same number of digitized copies in Romanian language with total cost of about 1 mln euro were acquired by the Government of Romania in order to support 300 public libraries of Moldova.
Each donated set is made of new, valuable books… Part of them are the classics of Romanian literature, encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on personal development; but there are as well books of contemporary authors, – said Elena Pintilei.
The project “Books in Romanian language for the libraries of the Republic of Moldova” was initiated on April 2024, after several rounds of consultations between the National Library of Moldova and the Embassy of Romania in Moldova. The following week after the signing the contract the National Library of the Republic of Moldova has started distributing the volumes to the public libraries of Moldova.
