The National Library, one of the most prestigious institutions of the Republic of Türkiye and known as the Memory of Türkiye, was established in 1946 and started to service in 1948 in the building at Kumrular Street in Ankara. The National Library moved to its building in Bahçelievler in 1983.
The status of the National Library, which served as a directorate under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for many years, was changed according to the Presidential Decree in 2018 and it has been servicing under the General Directorate of Libraries and Publications since then.
Total size of all the library is 39.000 m2. 9.000 m2 of it is open to public. There are 8 storages, each of which is approximately 600 m2, where the books are archived and preserved. Across all sites open to public in the library there are 1.339 seats.
As the custodian of cultural heritage and a hub for intellectual and artistic engagement, the National Library of Türkiye is pioneering a new initiative to enhance public library environments through art.
