The National Library’s mission is to establish, develop, organise, conserve, preserve, research, communicate and value, in multiple forms, the national documentary heritage, to be available to the community through the services and programs offered, responding to information needs, reading, education, training, research, and lifelong learning.

Roles of the National Library of Republic of Moldova:
– Creation of an exhaustively full collection of the documents issued on the territory of Republic of Moldova
– Creation of a representative collection of foreign publications
– Preservation of the national printed heritage
– Achievement, together with the National Book Chamber, of the the bibliographic control, bibliographic utilization of the national repertory of publications
– Publication of the national retrospective bibliographic repertory of publications
– Performing of functions of the National centre of inter library loan, the National centre in the field of library automation and information
– Informational and documentary assistance to the Parliament and Government
– Collections communication
– National and international library cooperation
– Researches and utilisation of the patrimonial collections
– Performing the functions of the National Centre for Library Science
– National Centre of Statistics in library area
