Exhibition of prints and engravings from XVII to XIX century at the National Library of the Republic of Moldova

A new exhibition project Prints and engravings from XVII to XIX century gives visitors the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the history of engraving, with the works of European engravers and much more. The exhibition was created from the old book collection of the National Library of Moldova.

The art of engraving has its origins in medieval book illustration. As a new form of art, it became accessible in the 15th century, simultaneously with the printed book, quickly gaining popularity due to its low cost.

At the beginning, the engravers took inspiration for their works by turning to biblical subjects, later they approached the events from the ancient myths, landscapes, portraits of famous figures and scenes from everyday life. Despite the fact that the engravings could not compare with either the size, external brilliance, or richness of colour like seen in paintings, the great engravers of the Middle Ages managed to create works of art that amaze to this day with their clarity of lines, their play of shades and their meanings.

Over time, the art of engraving has evolved and new forms and techniques have been developed. In the 18th century, these were being perfected around European countries. It became a new niche for book lovers and collectors: collecting the engravings from books, which had begun to be perceived as valuable works of art.

The exhibition will be open until 30 April 2025 (National Library of the Republic of Moldova, second building).
