The National Library of Greece (NLG) announces the donation of 100,000 euros from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) in the cherished memory of Filippos Tsimpoglou, Director General of the NLG (2014-2023). The donation has been approved to support the identification, documentation, cataloguing, preservation, and presentation of the NLG art collection in its entirety. This extraordinarily rich and interesting collection consists of engravings and paintings of significant artists, mainly from European schools, styles and periods ranging from the late 15th century to the 20th century. The works come from donations to the NLG, such as the one made by Ioannis Gennadios, as well as from purchases. During the two-year project, the identification and detailed description of the items will be carried out according to international standards, so that they can be searched through the NLG electronic systems. Upon the completion of the cataloguing and documentation, an exhibition will be held in a designated space within the library premises featuring selected works from this collection and a relevant catalogue dedicated to the memory of Filippos Tsimpoglou will be published.
