From March 18 to 20, 2021, the National and University Library in Zagreb is organizing the international conference Solidarity in Culture: Protection of Cultural Heritage in Crisis .
The organization of the Conference is a response to contemporary universal threats to the preservation of cultural heritage, as well as to the need to establish a comprehensively planned system of its protection. The purpose of the Conference is to emphasize the need to design an integrated, inclusive and carefully considered approach to the protection of cultural heritage, to thematize various forms of intra-sectoral and cross-sectoral cooperation and to promote cooperation and solidarity among cultural institutions in this context. Taking into account contemporary global threats to the preservation of cultural heritage and the need to establish a comprehensively planned system of its protection, as well as the need to network and develop a solidary network of cultural institutions, the National and University Library in Zagreb will organize an international conference from 18 to 20 March 2021 called Solidarity in culture: protection of cultural heritage in crisis conditions ( Solidarity and culture: heritage protection under conditions of crisis ). The purpose of the Conference is to emphasize the need to design an integrated, inclusive and carefully thought-out approach to cultural heritage protection, to thematize various forms of intra-sectoral and cross-sectoral cooperation and to promote cooperation and solidarity among cultural institutions in this context.
The Conference is expected to be attended by Croatian and international experts in the field of preventive and curative protection of tangible cultural heritage, as well as in the field of security policy and civil protection management. With a two-day program, exhibitors will be able to present the results of their research on the protection of cultural heritage in crisis situations through lectures and poster presentations and look back at the experiences gained.
In preparing the Charter on the Management of Cultural Heritage in Crisis and the Guidelines on the Protection of Heritage in Such Circumstances, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)recently, it emphasized the importance of including cultural heritage protection in risk management plans in crisis situations as a way of preventing irreversible losses of tangible cultural heritage. Accordingly, at the Conference, the concepts of cultural heritage protection will be presented to security policy systems and the need to achieve interoperability between the cultural sector and the civil protection sector will be emphasized. The management of cultural heritage, viewed as a set of diverse and irreplaceable national resources, inevitably implies its comprehensive protection, in which it is necessary to include the wider cultural and scientific community and network the institutions of these communities based on the principles of solidarity and cooperation. The program of the Conference will thematize these areas and examine the role of public institutions in culture in the development of the system of management of material cultural heritage in crisis conditions. The thematic framework of conference presentations includes systems and techniques for the protection of library, museum and archive materials in crisis conditions, interoperability between the cultural sector and the civil protection sector, the contribution of cultural institutions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda 2030., representation of cultural heritage in national disaster risk reduction strategies, involvement and education of citizens in the field of cultural heritage protection, promotion and strengthening of the culture of solidarity among European and world institutions in the cultural sector, linking cultural and security policies in Europe and the world and other innovative and relevant themes.
