The Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania is a national cultural institution open to all users, active in the areas of dissemination of information, culture, science and education, performing library activities and ensuring implementation of the national information policy falling within its competence.
The main objectives of library operations are:
– to collect and ensure long term preservation of all published documents issued in Lithuania
– to bring up-to-date the national documentary cultural heritage, ensure its dissemination and integration into the common European data infrastructure
– to ensure access to information and knowledge, develop information and cultural competence of the society
– to encourage the society to seek new knowledge and ensure the dissemination and application of that knowledge
– to carry out applied research of information and communication sciences as well as consulting and expert activities
The Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania is the main Lithuanian research library open to the public, also performing the functions of a parliamentary library.
Exactly four centuries have passed since the first publication of Sarbiewski’s poetry collection “Three Books of Lyrics” in Cologne, Germany, in 1625, which made him famous in Europe. The first single-exhibit exhibition is dedicated to this work.
