The National and University Library of Slovenia (NUK) is winding up its celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of its beginnings. Over the past year, the library has commemorated this important milestone with various events, exhibitions, and contributions, highlighting the historical decision to prioritize access to knowledge, education, and culture. Throughout this celebratory year, NUK has focused on emphasizing the enduring significance of its mission, responsibilities, and values, while paying respectful homage to the library’s history, the events that shaped it, and the distinguished librarians who have served within its walls.
On December 3rd, the library hosted an open house event to mark the ending of celebratory year. Visitors explored the architectural marvel of Jože Plečnik, who designed the library’s iconic building. Since 2021, this structure, along with other Plečnik works in Ljubljana, has been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Visitors also learned about the library’s mission and its tasks, with special attention given to the expert presentation of France Prešeren’s manuscript legacy, including four handwritten versions of his poem Zdravljica. The manuscript of Zdravljica has been recognized by the European Commission as one of the most significant monuments reflecting the history of European ideas and unity, earning it the European Heritage Label (EHL). In addition to viewing the manuscripts, visitors also took the opportunity to listen to an expert lecture on the manuscript. As part of this special anniversary, the library seized the opportunity to showcase its most treasured collections to the wider public.
A facsimile of Zdravljica manuscripts will remain on display at NUK until the conclusion of the exhibition Hranimo misli – že 250 let (Preserving Thoughts – for 250 Years). Visitors will have one final chance to view them during a guided tour on Slovenia’s cultural holiday, February 8, 2025.
