The National Library of the Republic of Moldova in partnership with the European Institute of Political Studies from Moldova with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova and the Electronic Government Agency (EGA) Estonia organized on Friday, September 27, 2024, the public discussion “Women Ambassadors of the European Union: Leadership and impact in the community”.
The public discussion was aimed to strengthen the role of librarians as promoters of European values. The librarians were themselves regarded as Ambassadors of European Union, part of the broader country project “Women Ambassadors of the European Union”, unifying the community of women of Moldova promoting European path of the Republic of Moldova. As public persons, librarians facilitate the access to information and provide the relevant data to the citizens about European integration, combat misinformation and promote a correct understanding of the benefits and challenges of this process.
After signing the Association Agreement with the European Union in 2014 and obtaining, in 2022, the status of candidate for accession, Moldova is in a complex process of integration into European structures. This process requires legislative and institutional reforms, as well as profound social changes. By organizing events, thematic exhibitions, debates addressed to various categories of citizens, librarians of Moldova can facilitate the understanding of the accession process and encourage the active participation of citizens in the discussions, said the General Director of the National Library of Moldova Elena Pintilei.
Prominent representatives from the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, the Government of the Republic of Moldova, international organizations, public authorities, opinion leaders and members of civil society presented the concrete strategies and actions taken to align with European Union standards, highlighting the efforts to become an integral part of the European family, with a special emphasis on the need to strengthen social and economic cohesion at the national level.
More than 100 representatives of national, university, municipal, district and community libraries participated in the discussion, who emphasized the contribution of libraries as dialogue platforms for the community in supporting the European path of the Republic of Moldova. The emphasis was placed on the role of libraries as centers of knowledge and continuous learning, essential for educating an informed society and for facilitating access to information resources, in disseminating essential information about the European Union and stimulating the active participation of citizens in the European integration process. In the context of the European aspirations of the Republic of Moldova, libraries aim to contribute to the development of a more informed, cohesive and active society, essential for the consolidation of European consciousness in local communities.
