The mission of BANG (Books & Audiences Network Group) is to create a dynamic environment for discussion, dialogue, and the exchange of ideas and practices in bringing books and audiences together in exhibition settings, with the ambition to share our findings with others.
Exhibitions play a crucial role in fulfilling the mission of libraries by bringing diverse collections to life, engaging the public, and fostering a deeper appreciation for the printed word. Showcasing books and other materials requires a unique approach to effectively present both textual and visual content. Given the complexity and significance of these exhibitions, our network of library and heritage professionals, researchers, and exhibition designers serves as a valuable hub. It provides resources, practical tools, and disseminates knowledge through annual webinars and regular group meetings. In 2025, the network plans to organise an in-person seminar to address contemporary challenges when developing book exhibitions.
The network includes libraries with permanent exhibitions dedicated to book publishing, such as the National Library of Latvia, the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR), the National Library of Germany (Museum of Books and Writing), the British Library, the Royal Library of the Netherlands, the National Library of Estonia, the National Library of Scotland, the independent publisher Lodret Vandret (Denmark), the University of Leicester, the University of Manchester, and the University of Cambridge. It also encompasses a community of practice, including book artists, librarians, archivists, heritage professionals, and designers.
We encourage national libraries to join the network and contribute to the exchange of practices and approaches, helping to create a shared perspective on modern library exhibitions and the challenges faced by libraries today.
