Exhibition “The Deportations from Bessarabia, times of a sad memory” organized by the National Library of the Republic of Moldova

“The Train of Pain” exhibition was opened on the Grand National Assembly Square, Chisinau with the occasion of the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the largest mass deportation of population from the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (July 6-9, 1949); the exhibition is available to the public from July 6, 2024, between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.

On July 6th the commemorative meeting on Grand National Assembly Square was opened by the President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean and President of the Parliament Igor Grosu, who urged citizens to visit the exhibition “The Train of Pain”.

To commemorate the saga and to present and value the documentary works and memoirs from its collections, the National Library of the Republic of Moldova organized the thematic exhibition “The Deportations from Bessarabia, times of sad memory”, which aims to elucidate the historical truth about the phenomenon of deportations through the testimonies of those who suffered unjustly, those who survived the Gulag or their descendants.

About 100 documents are on display, including: the memories of Eufrosinia Kersnovski, a noblewoman from Soroca town, deported to Siberia in 1941, the 8 volumes “Archives of Memory” which show the recovery and historical valorization of the memory of the victims of the totalitarian-communist regime in the USSR; “Memory Book / Cartea Memoriei”, 4 volumes with the names of the victims subjected to repressions in the localities of the Republic of Moldova, serial publications from the BNRM collections, etc.

The exhibition “The Deportations from Bessarabia, times of sad memory” has two locations – “The Train of Pain” complex exhibition from the Grand National Assembly Square and the main building of the National Library of the Republic of Moldova.

The mass deportation from July 6-9, 1949 was the largest organized operation on the current territory of the Republic of Moldova, as a result of which 36 thousand people or over 11 thousand families suffered. The houses, lands and goods of the deported peasants were handed over to the collective farms, and some of them were stolen and sold. 3,071 trucks and 1,736 wagons were mobilized for the operation of deportation of Moldavians to Siberia region.
