The National Library of the Republic of Moldova, giving consideration to the declaration of 2023 the Year of Ukrainian Culture in the Republic of Moldova, held “The Days of Ukrainian Culture at the National Library of the Republic of Moldova” on May 10-12, 2023.
The series of events incorporated extensive discussions, exhibitions, book presentations, but also consisted of a round table, guest speaker sessions and scintillating social events, that helped Moldavian and Ukrainian librarians to develop networks and transform their ideas into actions.
On May 11, 2023 the program started with the opening of the book exhibition “Ukraine in between the pace and the war” from the collections of documents of the National Library of Moldova. The exhibition includes over 200 documents (monographs, albums, publications, periodicals, etc.) and it helps to look back into the past and study the historical development, thus to understand better the present and the future of Ukraine.
The opening of the Days of Ukrainian Culture at NLRM was supported by the Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko, who stressed in his video message the importance and significance of the events during the Year of Ukrainian Culture in Moldova.
The greetings of opening the Ukrainian Days at the National Library of Moldova came from the Chairman of the Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture of Moldova Boris Cremene, the Ambassador of Ukraine in the Republic of Moldova Marko Shevchenko with his wife Olesya Shevchenko, the Director General of the National Library of Moldova Elena Pintilei, the Director General of the Odessa National Scientific Library Iryna Biriukova , the Deputy Director of the Department of culture, nationalities, religion and the protection of the cultural heritage of the Odessa Regional State Administration Yaroslava Riznikova, representatives of the Ukrainian community, representatives of culture, science and art.
There was also presented the photo exhibition “Postcards from Ukraine” (a project of Ukrainian Institute) to the attention of the attendees.
The Odessa National Scientific Library came with an important book donation to the National Library of Moldova, exhibited as well in public area. The Ukrainian Embassy in Moldova, on his turn, donated to the National Library of Moldova children’s book as a part of the project “Ukrainian bookshelf”. This project is being implemented under the patronage of the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska in many countries of the world. In Moldova, it is managed by the wife of the Ambassador of Ukraine Olesya Shevchenko.
Also in the program of events there was included the presentation of the Romanian translations of the books of Ukrainian writers Sergei Zhadan (“Anarchy in UKR”, “Boarding school”, “Jazz in Donbas”) and Yuri Andrukhovich (“Rekreatsii”) (co-organizer: Publishing House “Cartier”), the meeting and discussion with the author of the book “Ukrainian Borsch” Piotr Pogorzelski (co-organizer: Polish Institute from Bucharest), the creative lab for children (co-organizers: Polish Institute from Bucharest, Vadul lui Voda city public library and lyceum “Stefan Voda”) and the visit to the Chisinau municipal public library of the Ukrainian literature and culture “Lesea Ukrainka” (branch of the Chisinau municipal public library “B.P. Hasdeu”); (co-organizers: municipal public library “B.P. Hasdeu”, municipal public library of the Ukrainian literature and culture “Lesea Ukrainka”).
On May 12, 2023 the National Library of the Republic of Moldova organized the round table “The Values that Unite Us”. There were made communications by the staff of the Odessa National Scientific Library, the National Library of the Republic of Moldova and the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Moldova. Among the invited guests there were representatives of the Ukrainian Embassy in Moldova, the National Children’s Library of the Republic of Moldova “Ion Creanga” and others. There were discussed topics of common interest and experiences from the professional activity of the national libraries of both states.
The professional study visit of the representatives of the National Scientific Library from Odesa to the National Library of the Republic of Moldova was carried out according to the Memorandum concluded between the two libraries in 2019.
